What a salvage title actually means

People treat a salvage title like a death certificate, or like a coupon on a clean car. It is neither.

A U.S. title is the state’s ownership sheet for one VIN. A brand is a stamp that office put on that sheet. Salvage is the common one. An insurer wrote the car off as a total, or the damage crossed a percent of value the state uses as a line. The clerk brands the title. A lot of states then issue a salvage certificate instead of a road title. That paper says the car was totaled. It is how the next clerk is supposed to know.

Put the car on a lift and look at the exhaust, just ahead of the catalyst. A hex bung in the pipe. A probe screwed into the stream. A harness clipped back toward the computer. That is the oxygen sensor — O2, lambda, same part. It is the only thing in the pipe that tells the computer what the last fire actually burned.

Pop the oil cap on a street four and look at the valve cover. A rubber grommet. A hose. Sometimes a little can with a nipple. That is the PCV — positive crankcase ventilation. It is the only part of the ventilation loop you can usually pull with two fingers.

Pop the hood on a turbo four and look at the compressor housing — the cold snail with the intake hose clamped to it. A little can hangs off the side. A hose runs from the housing into that can. A rod comes out the other end and disappears toward the hot side. That rod is the wastegate actuator. It is the only moving part you can usually see without pulling the turbo.
