BMW i3: what the 2026 reveal establishes
BMW reused i3 for a Neue Klasse sedan. The 2026 announcement establishes its design and planned production timing, not a confirmed U.S. model-year designation.
The new BMW i3 is a sedan, rather than a continuation of the earlier upright i3 hatchback. BMW reused the name for the second model of its Neue Klasse family, launching the design as the i3 50 xDrive in its March 18, 2026 announcement. It is the second Neue Klasse model, not the second Neue Klasse sedan.
There is a necessary date qualification. “2026” in this article refers to the announcement and planned production calendar. The cited release schedules Munich production from August 2026 and first deliveries from that autumn. It does not itself establish a U.S. model-year label or prove that a particular U.S. dealer had stock when this article was published. The older wording “Munich starts building them this month” has been replaced by that dated plan.
The identifying design change is the joining of the kidney grille and four-eye lighting into a broad horizontal element. BMW calls the profile a 2.5-box silhouette, with a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a greenhouse set back inside wider shoulders. These are manufacturer design descriptions; they do not report our own encounter with a production car.
Illuminated kidney contours require another qualifier. BMW lists the Iconic Glow exterior package as optional. A photograph showing that effect demonstrates a configured example, not lighting fitted to every i3. The sedan’s horizontal rear lamps and flush door-handle treatment help distinguish it from the old hatchback even with that optional animation switched off.
The old article also assigned a NACS inlet and a CCS adapter to the U.S. car without a checked specification. Those claims have been removed. Use the announcement to recognize the new sedan; use a market-specific production specification to confirm model year, charging hardware and final equipment.
