The 2026 Ford Expedition opens in two pieces
The 2026 Expedition Split Gate combines a liftgate and folding lower panel. The 500-pound tailgate rating and optional Cargo Tailgate Manager need separate treatment.
The 2026 Expedition’s Split Gate divides the cargo opening into two useful surfaces: an upper section that lifts and a lower section that folds down. Ford explains the arrangement as roughly three-quarters liftgate and one-quarter pickup-style tailgate in its fifth-generation reveal. Its 2026 model page continues to list the Split Gate.

The lower panel is where the design changes the cargo routine. It provides a surface at the opening rather than leaving every object supported only by the cargo floor. Ford rates the tailgate to support up to 500 pounds. That is the panel’s support rating, not the vehicle’s payload or permission to exceed the owner’s manual’s operating limits.
The Cargo Tailgate Manager is available equipment. Its seatback can also form a serving-table arrangement, but the closed exterior seam does not establish that the accessory is fitted. Likewise, Ford’s available Open On Approach function is a convenience feature, separate from the existence of the two-piece gate.

The photographs here are 2025 auto-show vehicles, not newly authenticated 2026 examples. They illustrate the generation’s design. The standard-wheelbase Expedition and extended MAX also need separate identification; a trim badge alone does not settle body length.

When comparing listings, confirm the model year and cargo equipment on the original sticker. The seam explains how the door opens; it cannot confirm every feature a brochure demonstrates.
