The 2026 Outback finally looks like a new Outback
The seventh-generation Outback parks with a flatter roof and an upright face. The last one kept getting a new mouth. This sheetmetal is new.
The last Outback was a sixth-gen wagon Subaru kept dressing. This one is a new body. On the 2026 Outback the lid sits flatter, the rear pillar is a wider post, and the nose stands up instead of smiling. Seventh generation. From the sidewalk you can finally name it.
The face is a tall hex. Lamps live in the corners as stacked LED units — Subaru calls them vertically placed headlights — with body-color frames around the holes. The grille is bigger and more upright than the sixth-gen mouth. Lower cladding is textured plastic, the kind meant to take gravel. Premium, Limited, and Touring share that fascia. Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness put the 2.4 turbo behind a similar hole. The mesh will not tell you which boxer is in there.
What changed the silhouette is the roof. Subaru raised the lid about two inches and squared the sides so the glasshouse does not duck. The belt is a crease. Roof rails are the usual ladder, 800 pounds sitting still, with hash marks so the crossbars land where you want them. That flatter plane is why the well grew — 34.6 cubic feet with the seats up, two more than the last one — and why the car now parks like an SUV that used to be a wagon. Wheelbase is still 108.1 inches. Length is 191.7. Street trims sit on 8.7 inches of air. The stance is the new stamp, not a lift kit.
The tail signed the same paper. A light bar spans the gate. OUTBACK sits in spaced letters on the lid. SUBARU is stamped into the lower cladding, a panel you pull if a hitch needs the hole. One tip on the 2.5. Dual outlets on the XT. From thirty feet the roof already named it.
