The 2026 R1S still wears vertical lamps

The R1S’s upright oval lamps and horizontal bar are recognizable Rivian styling, but the outline is not enough to establish its lighting hardware. Rivian’s second-generation introduction describes redesigned lamps and RGB LEDs in the horizontal bars while retaining the recognizable family signature.

The practical distinction is Gen 1 versus Gen 2. Rivian’s current Dynamic Adventure Lighting explanation expressly excludes Gen 1 R1S and R1T vehicles. It describes adaptive beam control, dynamic low-beam leveling and steering lights as functions of the newer system. The LEDs, sensors and software work together; an oval headlamp in a sales photograph cannot demonstrate that the adaptive feature is present or enabled.

The Gen 2 horizontal bars also have individually controlled RGB segments. Rivian describes uses such as a green charging-progress display and roadside lighting. Those colors can express vehicle status or software features, rather than a different body trim.

When identifying a 2026 R1S, establish its model year and hardware generation from the vehicle record and confirm its current software. The shared face does not establish motor count, battery configuration or a headlight function. Neither wheelbase nor a short overhang explains why the designer chose a vertical lamp shape.
