The second-generation 2027 VW Atlas: trims, prices and the new 282-hp turbo

The Atlas has been Volkswagen’s big three-row family SUV in the U.S. since 2017, and the 2027 model is the second generation. It brings new sheet metal, a stacked-headlight face, a more powerful four-cylinder engine and a much richer cabin. Volkswagen of America’s own media pages would not load for this review, so the details here come from the indexed text of VW’s April 2026 design release, trade-press reprints of VW’s launch and pricing announcements, and the EPA’s fuel economy listings.

The new face

VW’s design release describes double-stacked headlight modules and a masked upper grille. The launch announcement adds new front and rear lighting signatures, with illuminated badges and lighting elements on most trims. Full LED headlights with an adaptive front-lighting system and animated LED taillights are standard on the base SE.

The lit details are trim-dependent. According to the pricing announcement, the SE with Technology is where the illuminated horizontal light bar across the grille and the glowing front and rear VW badges first appear. A base SE at night will not look like the glowing press car.

One engine, two drivetrains

The 2027 Atlas rides on the updated MQB Evo platform and is slightly longer than before. Every version uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 282 hp and 258 lb-ft, an eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, with 4Motion all-wheel drive available. Trims and prices

All prices exclude a $1,525 destination charge. The two SEL trims come only with 4Motion and get R-Line styling as standard.

• SE: 18-inch wheels, hands-free power liftgate, front and rear parking sensors, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, a 12.9-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated leatherette front seats, and wireless charging for two phones.
• SE with Technology: 20-inch wheels, the lit grille bar and badges, a 15-inch touchscreen and a factory hitch. Options include a panoramic sunroof, second-row captain’s chairs and a blacked-out wheel package.
• SEL R-Line: R-Line bumpers, a blacked-out grille, leather seats, a head-up display and heated second-row seats.
• SEL Premium R-Line: 21-inch wheels, Nappa leather, massaging front seats, Harman Kardon audio, a 360-degree camera and Park Assist Plus.

Towing depends on trim

The pricing announcement lists a 2,000-pound towing limit on the base SE. From the SE with Technology up, a factory hitch raises that to 5,000 pounds. Check the equipment list before hooking up a trailer.

Inside and safety

The gear selector has moved to the steering column, which frees console space. A seventh airbag between the front seats is new. IQ.DRIVE is upgraded to support driver-initiated automatic lane changes on the highway.

2026 or 2027?

The 2026 Atlas is still being sold and photographed, and some of VW’s own consumer imagery was labeled as earlier model years during this review. The stacked headlights and new grille mark the 2027. The model year on the window sticker or VIN confirms it, and the trim decides which lights actually glow. VW builds the Atlas in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
