What a brake rotor actually does

A brake rotor is the spinning disc the pads pinch. It dumps the heat. It is not the caliper, and it is not the whole corner.

The myth is that the shiny disc is the clamp — or that “the rotors” are the whole corner. What a brake rotor actually does is spin with the wheel and give the pads a surface to bite. That bite turns speed into heat. The disc is the heat sink. The caliper is not.

The hat bolts to the hub. The ring is what the pads pinch — two faces, inboard and outboard. A solid rotor is one slab. A ventilated rotor is two faces with vanes between them so air can carry the heat out. Cross-drilled holes are just more edge. None of that is the clamp.

The caliper is the clamp. Fluid moves a piston. The pads are the grab. This piece is the spinning plate they grab. Grooves and a thin ring are the disc telling you the heat and the bite lived here. It is not the caliper. That post already exists.
