What a dealer plate actually is
California and Texas dealer-plate examples: license-linked use, inventory and service restrictions, and why plate appearance does not establish buyer ownership.
A dealer plate is on the car during a test drive. Does that mean the buyer owns a registered vehicle? The plate identifies a licensed firm’s plate privilege. It is not evidence that a sale or buyer registration has been completed.
California DMV manual section 2.090 describes special plates bearing the licensed firm’s number. They may be used on vehicles the licensee owns or lawfully possesses, within the permitted uses. The manual excludes work or service vehicles and certain transport uses. The phrase dealer plate is not permission to use any dealership vehicle for any trip.

The car under the plate can change. That does not mean the car has no owner: the dealership or another lawful owner still exists. It means the plate assignment works differently from a regular registration plate permanently associated with a buyer’s vehicle record.
Texas’s current dealer-plate page separates standard dealer plates, dealer temporary plates and other categories. Its current system uses metal plates; calling every short-term dealer or buyer credential a paper tag is outdated. Standard dealer plates have listed personal, demonstration and transport uses, but there are restrictions on loads and dealer-service work. The dealer’s license also limits the vehicle types on which its plates may be used.

For a California purchase, the dealer-sale registration guidance describes the buyer’s application and report-of-sale process. That process is separate from borrowing a firm’s dealer plate.
Ask which plate category is displayed, which licensed firm issued it, and what document covers this drive. The photographs identify different states’ metal; they do not prove legal use, insurance coverage or buyer ownership on an individual trip.
