What a head gasket actually does

A head gasket seals the block to the cylinder head, holding combustion in the bores and keeping coolant and oil apart where those passages cross.

The head gasket seals the joint between the cylinder block and cylinder head. That joint has more than one thing to contain: combustion gas at the cylinders, coolant passages and oil passages. The gasket and the force clamping it must keep those paths sealed.

Read the openings by their job

The large openings correspond to the cylinders. Smaller openings provide routes for fluids or fasteners. Their pattern has to match the engine’s castings; an apparently similar sheet is not sufficient evidence of compatibility.

Elring’s gasket requirements explicitly distinguish gas, coolant and oil sealing. A failed seal can involve different paths through this joint. It need not put coolant into the oil, and a visible external leak is different from communication between neighboring cylinders.

The damaged web illustrates where one sealing region can be compromised. The image does not establish the operating temperature, distortion or clamping history that caused the damage.

The sheet works with the surfaces and bolts

Head-gasket construction is engine-specific. Elring lists metal-layer, metal-elastomer and metal-soft-material designs. It also explains that multi-layer steel gaskets require finer, more precise mating-surface quality than metal/soft-material designs. The surface requirements belong to the sealing design, not to a universal machining rule.

The bolts apply the force that compresses the gasket and distributes sealing load. Elring’s bolt explanation treats that clamp as part of the whole sealing system. It recommends new bolts with its installation instructions, while acknowledging that some vehicle manufacturers permit reuse subject to measurements and different instructions.

This cutaway helps locate the joint; it does not show a repair specification. Correct diagnosis, surface condition, gasket choice and the engine’s fastener instructions all matter. White exhaust, lost coolant or residue under an oil cap does not independently prove a failed head gasket or identify its leak path.
