What a heater core actually does
Follow the coolant and airflow through a heater core, distinguish the heat exchanger from the heat source, and see a scoped example of electric coolant heating.
A conventional coolant-fed heater core is a small heat exchanger in the vehicle’s HVAC system. Warm coolant supplies one side; blower air crosses the other. The core transfers heat from the liquid to the air rather than creating it by itself.

Valeo describes the core as an air/water heat exchanger used for cabin heating, demisting and defrosting. The fin stack increases the surface through which that heat can be transferred.
Follow the liquid and the air separately
The coolant pipes are the liquid path. Air delivered by the blower is a separate stream: coolant should stay inside the core rather than entering the cabin air. Heat moves across the metal separating them.

On a combustion-engine vehicle, the heat begins in the engine. The cooling system transports it and regulates operating temperature. HELLA’s cooling-system explanation describes the pump and thermostat jobs. Selecting a warmer cabin setting cannot create heat in coolant that has not warmed yet.
The complete HVAC system decides how that heat is delivered. Coolant controls and air-routing hardware vary, so one photographed hose or temperature knob does not identify the control arrangement for every vehicle.

The core is not the heat source
Electrification makes this distinction useful. A coolant loop can receive heat from an electric heater rather than an engine. As one specific example, Webasto’s HVH 50/70 heats coolant using electrical power. This does not mean every EV uses that part or the same cabin-heating architecture.
Weak heat therefore requires investigation of heat supply, liquid circulation and airflow/control, rather than immediate blame for the finned core. Damp carpet, fogging or an odor also needs its source established; it is not a complete diagnosis of a leaking heater.
