What a registration sticker actually is

A registration sticker is the month-and-year tab California puts on the rear plate. It is not the title. It is not the registration card, and it is not a smog certificate.

Is the tab on the plate the title? No. People also treat it like the glovebox card, or a smog cert. Those are different papers.

A registration sticker is the month tab and the year tab on the rear plate. Most California cars wear both there. They show when registration expires. The exact day is on the registration card. DMV has no grace period. Pay by that date. It is not the title. The county still titles it. It is not a smog certificate. It is not the card.

Why it matters: the tabs are month and year only. Miss midnight on the card and penalties start. The sticker is the curb tell. The card is the date.

Texas puts a validation sticker in the windshield, lower left, not on the plate. Same job, different glass. Five working days after the month dies, Texas still lets you roll. California does not. Lose that windshield sticker and the replacement sheet is VTR-60.
