What a sway bar actually does

A sway bar is an anti-roll bar that ties left and right suspension. It is not a spring that carries the car. It is not a shock, and it is not a strut tower.

The car leans on a freeway ramp. People call the bar across there a roll cage. Or they think it lifts the car. Or they point at the strut and say that is the bar.

That bar is the sway bar — anti-roll, stabilizer, same part. It ties the left corner to the right. One wheel hits and the bar twists, loading the other side so the body does not roll as far. It is not a spring that carries the car sitting still. It is not a shock. It is not the strut tower.

A roll cage is welded tube. A strut locates the hub. This is a torsion bar across the car — U-shaped, ends on the arms, middle in bushings on the body.
